I found this crochet blanket at my mom’s over the new year holidays.  It was made by my great grandmother several decades ago.  She had spent all her life up on a mountain in a rural area, never went beyond the state border, and the closest small town was 2 hours away on foot.  How she learned how to crochet is a mystery.  It was probably my grandmother learned how to knit in school and taught her mother.

This blanket is not the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen, but it is using a technique that I’ve never seen in anywhere else.  She used some leftover yarns and had to come up with a way to make it look special.

When we talk about creativity, we tend to point to people such as Steve Jobs or George Lucas.  Those days are over.  We are all creative in different charming ways, taking in what we see everyday and use as hints to make our lives more interesting and unique.

This year, I would like to take a few step forward to nurture our creativity.  Help people bloom in their new found grounds.  Help them balance between creativity and practicality.  Because, you see, creativity is all around us.

年末に実家で見つけたこの膝掛け。曾祖母が何十年か前に編んだもの。田舎の山奥に一生暮らし、一番近い街は歩いて２時間、という所にいて、どうやって編みものを習ったのかは今となっては分かりません。もしかしたら祖母が女学校で学んで、曾祖母に教えたのかも。

この膝掛け、世にも美しい、とは思わないけど、チャーミングだしそれに未だ見たことがない編み方をしているの。色々な残り糸を組み合わせて独特な編み模様を作るのに、随分工夫しているらしいんです。

わたしたちが「クリエイティブ」というとき、それはスティーブ・ジョブズやジョージ・ルーカスを思い浮かべがちだと思うのですが、それは古い考えかた。わたしたちは皆それぞれユニークな有り様でクリエイティブ。日々目にしたものを取り入れては、暮らしをもっと面白く個性的にしている人が沢山います。

今年私が取り組みたいことのひとつは、そんな日常のクリエイティビティを高めること。人々のクリエイティビティを再発見するお手伝いをすること。クリエイティブさと現実性のバランスをとること。なぜならクリエイティビティは、わたしたちの周りに普通に存在しているものだから。
