Slater Mill

Elizabeth took me to one of the oldest cotton mill in the States – Slater Mill, right here in Rhode Island. The story behind it was very interesting, and I enjoyed the guided tour very much.
ロードアイランド州にある、アメリカで最も古い水力発電の木綿織り工場に行ってきました。今ではミュージアムになっていますが、機械はすべて完璧にメンテナンスされていて動きます。その歴史も面白くて、ツアーをとても楽しみました。

They have an old 18th century house, a mill, and a factory where they used to produce machine parts for the mill.
ミュージアムは１８世紀の古い家と、工場と、工場で使う機械部品を作る作業場からなっています。



I was so fascinated by the machine parts factory, powered by water from the Blackstone River, that I took more picture there than in the actually mill. They were just so cool.
この下の写真は、機械部品工場のもの。隣にあるブラックストーン川から引かれた水で水車を動かし発電して、すべての動力が賄われています。あまりにもカッコいいので、実際の織物工場よりも作業場で沢山写真を撮りまくってしまいました。























They have a horrible story about using children as their source of labour, instead of slaves. I hate slavery either, but you know what I mean. But that’s just part of the history of manufacturing the first machine-weaved cotton fabric in the United States.
奴隷の代わりに６歳（！）以上の子供を働かせていた、という恐ろしい話がありましたが、それも歴史の一部ということでしょうか。
