Memories Rediscovered

Lori and I worked together briefly a few years ago, while she was still working for the company.
Then she did the bravest thing – she just left her work and went on doing what she wanted to do, taking film classes and volunteering for various cause.
I was intrigued by her house on a pond, and asked her if I could stay for a few days.

ローリとは数年前、彼女がまだNYの本社に勤務していた頃に短い間一緒に仕事をして、なぜか不思議と仲良くなりました。
とはいえ、当時は家に泊めてもらうほど親しかった訳ではなかったのですが、そのあとボストン来訪の際に色々案内してくれて、今回は家に泊めてもらいました。
なんせ、池（というか湖）の脇に住んでいると言っていたので。

彼女の住んでいるあたりは１９００〜３０年代に別荘として開発された地域だということで、彼女の家も築８０年。でも全然古くないのはなんでなんだろう。みんなそれくらい古い家に普通に住んでいます。

What intrigued me the most is her journey of discovering local histories and her family roots.
She has been researching on her ancestries on both father’s and mother’s side, and has found many fascinating – some of them shocking – stories that had long been lost.

とても面白かったのは、彼女が家族のルーツを探っていて、２００年前の新聞などからすっごく面白い話を沢山発掘していることです。
いくつかショッキングなスキャンダルもあったりして。

She is so involved in an local historical society, archiving postcards the local people had donated.
Some of them are more than 100 years old.

またボランティアで地元の歴史保存にも関わっていて、地元の人が寄贈した古い絵はがきのアーカイヴィングをしています。これらを見ていて感じたのは、歴史保存とは建物だけではなくて、「ストーリーを保存するのだ」ということ。だからこそ、人々が興味惹かれるし、大事に思うのです。

The ones that are shown here have photos taken at the same pond she lives by. They have postmarks on 1908 and 1912.

１００年以上前の絵はがき（というか写真！）もありましたが、これらは1908年と1912年のもの。

She has a key to one of the oldest houses in the city she lives in (north of Boston area). This throw was in the house, very intricate crochet work. Wonder if I could create a chart out of it.
