It’s Friday night, but a less exciting one than it used to be. I’ve got so much work, so much that a mere thought of the amount makes me feel numb. But, this is my first real weekend since I’ve moved to Kyoto, and I am determined to do at least one touristy thing. Kyoto has tons of things to see, not to mention many antique shops and great cafes. If you take a look at Tripadvisor’s Top 10 Places to Visit in Japan, 5 are in Kyoto. It’s been a full week since the hell of a hot humid day, being squeezed between hundreds of cardboard boxes in sans-airconditioning rooms with mosquitos. I am in Kyoto now, and the boxes are almost gone… except for my kitchen and the entrance area (which is a tiny space, really). My new kitchen is much smaller than the previous ones, and there is no space to put my spice rack nor some dried foods. So, they are still in boxes. There is no shoes rack either, so I am buying one. I’ve moved to Kyoto yesterday. It was dark when I got to Kyoto Station two nights ago by Shinkansen (the moving company took care of my stuff and I took a train to get here), couldn’t see a thing outside of my hotel window, but yesterday morning, it finally drawn on me that I came to a new territory. Things are very different in Kyoto, especially if you live in an old house. Equipments are so old that I don’t know how to use them (like, I don’t know how to plug my TV to antenna because I’ve never seen such an old plug). My weekend started with a little food preparation (ended with hours of work). I started making my own granola several months ago, and the routine still exists. In fact, I hadn’t been able to restock since returning home, and I was craving for my morning ritual (yogurt over my granola with some fruits). So, finally. It’s really easy. I never pre-measure anything, just put everything in a bowl one by one. The trick is to get a nice big bowl, which will make your life infinitely easier. Also, when measuring something like sugar or honey, I measure the container and deduct the amount I used. That way, no need to wash a sticky spoons or measuring cup. Well, I am sure most people…
こんな元気のよい写真から始めてみましたが、実はぐったりです。まだ時差ぼけしています。 While the above picture seems otherwise, I am pretty heavily jetlagged and feel completely exhausted. So, I get up at 4 in the morning, sometimes paint, other times make some jam or cook. それで朝4時から起きだして絵を描いたり（上）、仕事をしたり、梅しごとをしたり。（下） 絵は、なんだろう。ただ下塗りをして文字を書くのが好きなのです。たまにはペンで落書きをしたりもします。いつも大変いいかげんです。落書きに詩や日記を添えたりすることもあります。なので、絵はこれで完成。こうやって、20ページくらいまとめて塗ります。超テキトウ。たまに包み紙なんかを貼ります。 梅といえば、子供の頃は母が梅干しを作ったりしていました。あと、山形のおばあちゃんが青梅を塩漬けにして、毎年送ってくれていました。仕事から帰ってきた父がよく、大変大事そうに美味しそうに梅をカリカリかじっていましたが、苦すっぱ塩辛くて、まったく美味しくありませんでした。子供用には、その一旦塩漬けにした梅を砂糖漬けにしたものがひと瓶、これは妹と私のもの。 そんなことを思い出しながら、初めて梅を買ってみました。一袋に入っているのが何グラムかよく分からず（必ず1kgなんですね）、3袋買って2つはジャム用。1つは味噌漬けとしょうゆ漬けにしました。丁度砂糖がたんまりあったので、バッチリ。 ジャム用の梅は一煮立ちさせたらお湯を捨て、砂糖を入れて煮るのですが、沸騰させたら既に大分柔らかくなっていて、あっというまにジャムになりました。大変だったのは種を取り除く作業。これは煮る前に最初から切ってしまった方がいいのか、なやましい。ぐちゃぐちゃのジャムに良く洗った両手を突っ込んで、一個一個種を取りましたよ。 今回は5瓶できました。去年作った紅玉ジャムとレモンジャムがまだあるので、暫くジャムは買わなくて良さそう。たまにジャムをお土産などで頂いたり、自分で買ってきたりするのですが、正直自分で作った方が美味しいです。すみません。 さて、眠いけど仕事に戻るか。
During the last trip, instead of the cardigan I had been knitting, I made this shawl called Follow Your Arrow, designed by Ysolda Teague. It was designed as for a Mystery KAL, containing two sets of clues every week. You need to pick either Clue A or B, and either fits perfectly with your previous clues. Alert: Lots of photos in this post! Because, you cannot describe Terri’s class without showing what it was like to be in that magical space. I’ve been hearing many great things about “Tool Time with Terri” class over the years. My initial thought was “I have no woodworking space”, but after moving into a larger apartment a few years ago and now that I am moving into a tiny tiny house, the idea of customizing my own space started to have a bigger appeal. So I took the class. Probably the best class I’ve ever taken at Squam! Terri’s house, located 20 minutes away from the lake, was super gorgeous. 明らかに時差ぼけ真っ最中の日々。夕方に寝落ちてしまい、真夜中に目が覚めること３日目。今日はなんと夜の11時半に目が覚めてしまい（東海岸ではお昼前）、眠れません（それでブログを書いている）。2週間近くとても静かで真っ暗闇の場所にいたためか、自宅近所の明るさと五月蝿さがひと際辛く感じられます。もうすぐ東京を離れられて良かった。 注意：写真満載のポストになります なぜなら、写真なくして今回のSquamのクラスは語れないから。Terriが教える木工のクラスについていつも良い噂を聞いてはいたのですが、なんせ自宅が狭くて作業する場所なんてなかったので、なんとなくスルーしていた私。今のマンションに引っ越してから「押し入れに棚をつけたいな」とか「ここに台が欲しいな」などと思うようになり、興味が湧いてきました。本当に取って良かった。 ロッジから車で20分くらいのところにあるTerriの家は魔法の箱のよう。とにかく素敵で楽しい。 Especially her studio. (English text below) 尊敬する作家、マヤ・アンジェロウさんが８６歳で昨日亡くなったとのこと。アフリカ系アメリカ人女性の作家として、パイオニア的な存在であったのですが、彼女のアイデンティティを別にしても、素晴らしい書き手でした。その力強い「女」としての言葉に、ずっと憧れ続けています。 If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude. Don’t complain. 彼女の母が彼女に言ったという言葉。 私は生来の不平屋であると自覚しているので、この言葉を度々思い出すようにしています。でも、特に大事にしているのは前半部分。「気に入らないことがあるのなら、変えなさい。」 なんとなく我慢して、不満を言いながら人生をやりすごすのは嫌なのです。変えたい。 幸運にも3年前に同志に巡り合った私は、ほんの小さなところから変えてみることにしました。 手編みのマーケットを変えたい。 毛糸と棒だけで温かい衣類が作れてしまう編み物は、とても原始的でありながら奥の深い、創造性の発揮しやすいアートであり、手仕事です。しかも、羊毛から比較的簡単に糸まで作れてしまう。生き物を身近に感じられる作業でもあります。 本来は自由で原始的なものであるはずなのに、高度に規格化・工業化され、高齢化し、取り残されてしまっているのが日本の編み物でした。 そして、みんな「忙しくて編む時間なんてない」、と言う。 ふと思い返せば、なんで忙しいのだろう。結局、私たちは衣食住のために働き、働くために衣食住が必要なのです。着るものを自分で作れば、その時間と手間の分、自由になれます。そのあたりの歪んでいるところを取り戻して行くのが、これからの20年なのではないかという気がしているのです。 東京に我慢しながら暮らしている人が何千万人もいるなんて、おかしい。その一方で、空中分解しつつある地方が沢山あるのです。 子供の頃からずっと東京から逃亡したかった私は、それから何十年か経ちましたが、思い切って本当に逃亡してみることにしました。 ５月末で会社の仕事を辞め、夏前に京都にお引越しします。 先週末、家探しに行ってきました。家の広さはそんなに変わらないのに、家賃は半分以下。これまでの仕事を投げ打たなければならないので、きっと生活は大変になると思いますが、10代の頃から肩にのしかかっていた重しが取れた心持ちです。不便で時間のかかる生活に、暑くて寒い暮らしに、焦らずに慣れていきたいと思います。 自由になった心と時間をつかって、夏から精一杯amirisuの事業に取り組みたいと思います。 もちろん、これまでも中途半端にやっていた訳ではありませんが、時間でいえば本当は使いたい時間の1/3くらいで切り盛りしていました。他のことは考えなくていい、幸せ。本当にほんとうに嬉しいです。 より多くの人々を巻き込みながら、気分をあらたに、パワーアップしていきます。 今後とも、私たちとamirisuをどうぞ宜しくお願い致します。 ＊写真はなぜか水性栽培でどんどん勢いをますバジルと切り花（だった）バラ。うちの環境が随分適しているらしく。バジルは2回収穫しています。 It is sad to know that Maya Angelou passed away yesterday at the age of 86.
